There are many good websites out there to help us with our child’s speech development.
I know there will be many more that you have found or have been put onto by other families.

Here are a few that we have used:

http://www.elr.com.au
This is an Australian website full of resources that Speech Language Therapists (SLT) can utilise. Many SLTs spend a big chunk of time making resources for our kids to use and for us as families to practice with at home. The resources on this website have been developed by an SLT. There is a free trial, which lasts one week. The area of most interest to us would be the Extra Language Resources. There is lots of informaiton and it is quite complex. To pick the targets or areas of focus for your child you really need the expertise of an SLT. You can add this to the programme that your SLT has for your child and get some more resources to use at home. Kids love playing with the computer, so it may help to get more homework practice in.

Another Austrlian website by SLT Caroline Bowen. In particular there are some good powerpoint presentations with handouts that explain some really good concepts. I have used this for extended family members to show them more effective ways of interacting with my son. Look under Freebies, starting with Consumer slide shows. These cover Adult Communicative styles, How to Model and recast and how to do revisions and repairs. Once you know what to target for your child, (again taking the advice of your SLT) there are also some good pictures you can print out targetting particular sounds. There is also some good information on diagnosis.

This is an American site for all kids learning to read. It is colourful and fun, the downside is that they have American accents.

Please join this thread and add what you have found that has helped your child. Whether it be a website, a great book or an amazing SLT,or another learning programme let us know.
Looking forward to sharing your experiences!

Here are some more suggestions from Laura Wells the Speech Language Therapist with the Middlemore Cleft team.

http://www.talkingchild.com/toysonline.aspx Although this website is a toyshop, it does include some useful child development charts with ages and stages and lots of parent info and ideas.

http://www.speechtherapy.org.nz/ This is the New Zealand Speech Language Therapists Asssociation website. This contains a list of all the private SLTs who are members. Useful for parents who have decided they would like to pursue private speech language therapy.

http://www.speechtx.com/ Some free activity ideas etc. Has some on speech articulation. Language ideas may be most useful from here.

Thanks Laura, we appreciate it.

http://www.atozphonics.com/

Self explanatory a site to help you teach your child phonics. Phonological awareness is key to speech development and also literacy skills. This really help your child’s confidence levels, making school a fun place to bel.

http://www.dltk-teach.com/

An educational and craft site. With lots of printables, online games etc. Has a section on the alphabet. Take a look and be prepared to stay a while and look around.
