Final cosmetic procedures and discharge

Description:

In some young adults, the upper jaw does not grow sufficiently; however surgery can improve the facial proportion.  The nose can also develop an unusual shape.  Both these surgeries can be done, after completion of growth and any other minor cosmetic issues the patient chooses.  Ie, scar lines, nose and dentistry.

Things to talk about:

  • Timing of these procedures.
  • Pros and cons of outcomes versus side effects.
  • Self esteem.
  • Post operative realities.
  • Timing of these procedures.

Important information:

  • The decision on whether to have these procedures is a very personal one.  You may want to talk to some other young people who have just gone through this.  If so, please contact the Cleft Support Group on 0800 4 CLEFT  (0800 425 338)

Final clinic discharge:
Description:

You made it!  The cleft has been repaired.  The Cleft Team will now discharge you from their unit.

Things to talk about:

  • If I want further work done, can I do that?
  • How would I go about doing that?
  • What are the chances of passing this condition on to my children?
  • Don’t forget to thank the team – they appreciate the acknowledgement.  They have had the privilege and pleasure of seeing you grow up and turn into the wonderful adult you are today.  Now is your chance to thank them for the role they have played in allowing you to reach this milestone.
  • You are the sum of all the experiences you have lived through.  Having a cleft is not easy, but you are a stronger person for it.
