Orthodontic Treatment


Description:

The vast majority of children born with a cleft (either lip and/or palate) will need some form of orthodontic treatment.  Orthodontics is the specialist dentistry concerned with the growth and development of the jaws, straightening of teeth and correction of the way that teeth fit together.

Things to talk about:

  • How often will we need to visit the clinic during orthodontic treatment?
  • What do we do to ensure orthodontic treatment is successful?
  • What kind of results can be obtained?
  • How often will we need to visit the clinic during orthodontic treatment?

Important information:

  • There is no charge for orthodontic treatment for cleft children in New Zealand as it is covered by the public health system.
  • Orthodontic treatment for children with a cleft is done at the same time that their peers without a cleft would be having treatment and is, generally being completed within a 2 year timeframe.
  • To assist in obtaining the best results in the estimated treatment time, you can help by doing the following:
    • Follow the orthodontist’s instructions carefully.  Eg, wear your elastics.
    • Look after the health of your chld’s teeth, and don’t damage the brace.
    • At the end of treatment retainers need to be worn, usually for a long period of time.
